When you are in Bali, you must attend a Balinese dance performance. The dance traditions in Bali blend arts and religion. The Hindu religion influences the characters and narratives. Good versus evil is usually the central theme of the plays.
According to Wiki, there are various dance traditions you can see in Bali:
- Barong, King of the spirits
- Baris, war dances
- Cendrawish, the bird of paradise
- Condong, a basic dance, a preface to Legong
- Legong, a refined dance
- Kecak, the Ramayana monkey chant dance
Three dance genres became a member of the UNESCO Heritage Intangible cultural heritage officially in 2015: Wali (sacred dances), Bebali (semi-sacred dances) and Balih-Balian (dances for entertainment purposes).
Here is my blog on Bali Kecak dance and history. While in Bali I also had a chance to attend the Barong dance.
Here is a photo gallery of the Bali Barong performance. The dance portrays the conflict between Baron the king wearing a lion’s head and Rangda, the demon and mother who protects the spirits.
